Vince Alize, CEO and President of the New Jersey Chess Club (NJCC), has dedicated himself to building an inclusive chess community where players of all levels can compete, learn, and connect. His passion for the game was ignited through countless Thursday nights spent in the kitchen of mentor Ken Thomas alongside fellow pupil Richard Buschgans. Under Thomas's guidance, Vince discovered invaluable lessons that transcended the chessboard.
As a Certified United States Chess Federation (USCF) Tournament Director, Vince brings a wealth of expertise to his role at NJCC. He has organized numerous events throughout North Jersey and played a pivotal role in helping veteran organizer Ken Thomas revitalize the Hackettstown Chess Club. His deep understanding of tournament direction has greatly enhanced his ability to create enriching experiences for players with diverse styles and personalities.
Under Vince's leadership, NJCC hosts weekly USCF-rated tournaments open to both seasoned competitors and newcomers alike. Beyond just competitive play, he is committed to providing an ambient social space where members can relax and engage with one another between rounds or after events. Recognizing how chess can positively impact individuals facing unique challenges, Vince ensures free memberships for those with learning disabilities – offering them a safe haven to develop their skills and thrive within an accepting community.
One highlight from his distinguished career came when working on the 2025 USCF World Amateur Team Tournament as part of a prestigious organizing team comprised largely of international-level directors (IA/IO). In this capacity, he gained unparalleled insight into managing large-scale national events while further honing his operational acumen behind-the-scenes.
