Spectator Policy for Events Organized by NJCC

NJCC Chess Tournament Spectator Policy

Effective immediately, the playing halls at chess tournaments organized by the New Jersey Chess Club (NJCC) will be open only to the following individuals while games are in progress:

  1. - Players with ongoing games in that room

  2. - Tournament staff and officials

  3. - Press and attendees with official badges granting access

  4. - Persons directly authorized by the NJCC Tournament Director

What does this mean?

Parents, coaches, and other spectators who do not fall into these categories must exit the playing hall before play begins. Once a player has reported their game result, they must leave for the remainder of that round. Parents/coaches should advise players who have finished not to re-enter even to observe other games.

Penalties for violating this policy will be determined at the discretion of the Chief Tournament Director.

Which events are impacted?

This policy applies to all USCF-sanctioned chess tournaments.

Why is NJCC implementing this?

Closing off playing areas helps eliminate cheating allegations - especially regarding electronic devices - which often arise from spectators. This allows tournament directors to focus more on players rather than policing spectator behavior. It also protects competitive integrity since spectators have repeatedly disregarded rules around device usage.

Most importantly, players consistently express preference for closed floors as it reduces pressure and increases their enjoyment of play.

Is this a new policy?

While similar restrictions existed for younger age groups like K-1, K-6 etc., we are now extending closed floors to all sections of our scholastic events.

Tips for finding your child post-game:

• Hallways outside main playing areas should remain clear as passageways.

• We've moved exhibits/vendors out of these key hallways so parents/coaches can wait there more easily.

• Designated exits will be marked by grade/section inside & outside each hall. Check signage or handouts at Chess Control.

• Review venue maps beforehand (available on event websites). Arrive early if needed to familiarize yourself with locations.

• The Skittles Room makes an ideal waiting/meeting spot after rounds - plus vendors/exhibits will often be located there too.

We appreciate your understanding & cooperation in maintaining a positive tournament experience focused first and foremost on our young players!
